London Oxford Airport will shortly start work to create a further 17,800m2 (4.4 acres) of new high strength apron. At the same time it is resurfacing a further 5,000m2 of established surfaces with both projects scheduled for completion by year end.

This US$3.4m (£2.2m) project comes hard on the heels of the announcement of a new 4,440m2 (47,800 sq.ft.) hangar which has just commenced construction on the south side of the main airport site.

“The apron development represents a considerable enhancement of capacity and infrastructure development which will effectively double the parking capacity at the airport for aircraft weighing up to 50 tonnes. On a busy day we can sometimes be stretched for space, but now Oxford Airport will be able to accommodate far more aircraft, for visiting operators and based residents, at rates that represent better value than most of our London-centric airport peers,” remarked Business Development Director, James Dillon-Godfray.

“Adding the equivalent of over four football pitches-worth of additional space will give us a great deal more flexibility and allow with greater ease, the handling of modern regional airliners including the Bombardier Q400 and the Embraer family of regional aircraft, including the EMB-190 and the Lineage 1000 business jet.”

Well prepared for major event demand – including the 2012 Olympics

“On occasions when we need to clear the main apron for major events in the future like the Silverstone Grand Prix, and the forthcoming Olympics, Oxford will be able to accommodate typically 40 or so mid to larger-size executive jets opposite the new award-winning Oxfordjet FBO terminal facility,” he added.

In June the airport started work on a brand new 4,440m2 (47,787 sq.ft) three-bay hangar in an investment worth £3 million. The new three-bay facility will offer independent landside access, office space and car parking tailored to clients’ requirements. It will be the largest single facility built at the airport to date and when complete in December, it will have increased the total hangarage at the airport by 78% since 2005 to 240,500 sq ft (78,000m2 )

Offering independent landside access, office space and car parking, the new facility is scheduled for completion by December. According to the airport authority, each of the three bays in the new hangar will be capable of housing aircraft up to the size of a Global Express or regional airliner such as the ATR 72.

The new hangar features wide-span vertical-lifting doors. The airport is currently home to five EASA 145 maintenance organizations (EBAS, PremiAir, Eurocopter, AirMed and Oxford Aviation Academy) and eight charter operators.

It also plays host to several hundred pilots, engineers and other professionals in the general and business aviation industry.

London Oxford Airport last night scooped the accolade of Best Business Aviation Airport 2009 from the Airport Operators Association (AOA). The AOA praised the airport management’s vision and commitment for successfully building an attractive business aviation facility within just 18 months and its owners for their ongoing commitment to investment in the facility. The award was presented to Oxford Airport’s Managing Director Steve Jones during the Association’s Annual Conference Dinner at London’s Hilton Metropole Hotel by Simon Calder, Travel Editor of The Independent.

“We are absolutely delighted and proud to receive this fine endorsement from the AOA Board. It is especially appreciated as the votes are cast by those who know the industry inside out – and who know our competitors very well. This has been a hugely challenging year for everyone in the industry and our whole team has worked so hard throughout. I accept this on behalf of all of them and congratulate them in making Oxford Airport an award-winning airport.”

UK business aircraft charter start-up FlairJet has taken delivery of the first two UK-registered Embraer Phenom 100 business jets and is set to become the first company in Europe to operate the very light jet commercially.

“We hope to clinch our aircraft operator’s certificate this month and begin services before the end of the year,” says FlairJet chief executive David Fletcher.

The first Phenom 100 was handed over to London Oxford airport-based FlairJet on 29 October and the second on 6 November.

The aircraft are managed by FlairJet on behalf of their owners – international property developers and Oxford Airport proprietors the Reuben brothers. “We plan to add another five managed Phenom 100s to our line-up next year and hope to take delivery of our own aircraft in 2012,” says Fletcher.

FlairJet plans to expand its fleet gradually. “We are keen to add larger types to the aircraft operator’s certificate, but we will monitor our growth in the current climate as we don’t want to expand too fast too soon. Our plan is to build our profile – we are a new operator, with a new aircraft based at a new airport,” says Fletcher
